Clyde de Loache Ryals (1928-1998) was a Duke University Professor of English for 25 years, and a distinguished Victorian British literature scholar known for his study of the poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning. The executive director of the Duke University's Carlyle Letters Project, Ryals earned recognition for editing The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.
